If you have been a diet junkie for any period of time you will remember the Zone diet. It was created by Dr. Barry Sears to help dieters lose weight by leveling out insulin levels. In fact, the Zone Diet was one of the pioneers in the ever-increasing number of meal bars on the market today, with the introduction of the Zone Diet bars. The goal of the Zone diet is to balance out carbohydrates, proteins and fat intake at each meal. This results in stable blood sugar levels, which is one of the keys to successful weight loss.

Unlike many diets today, the Zone diet recommends balancing your diet with 1 part protein to 4 parts carbohydrates. However, keep in mind that most of the carbohydrates are meant to come from fruits and vegetables, not breads and starches. Likewise, most of the fat intake should be from “good” oils such as olive oil and safflower oil. The Zone diet also recommends the supplementation of fish oil, which is known to be one of the best ways to get the necessary Omega 3 fatty acids that the brain and cells of the body need to function properly. The Zone diet has been compared to the Atkins diet, however I think it is important to note that the Atkins diet emphasizes high protein intake with no regards to fat and the Zone diet is limiting as to where the fat comes from. This is a much safer alternative.

When it comes to Zone diet meals and meal plans, there are many resources available. Although this diet is not the popular diet of choice any longer, it still has a consistent and loyal following. There are many online resources available that assist in making the Zone diet very easy to follow. There are also countless diet menus available so that diet boredom will not become an issue. The Zone diet is one that can be sustained for life. It is a healthy eating lifestyle rather than just a diet. No matter if you choose to try this diet for medical purposes or for traditional weight loss reasons, the Zone diet is proven to provide many benefits beyond weight loss.
