Athletes Special Diets
If you have a child who is an athlete, you may be wondering just what type of diet is the best for them. Is there a special diet for athletes? Yes, there are special athlete diets such as muscle building diets, Olympic athlete diets and even endurance training diets. However, this does not mean that your child needs to be on one of them. If you follow basic healthy eating standards, your child will get all of the nutrients they need to perform well in school and on the field.
As a general rule, a diet for a young athlete should consist of a lot of calories. Not only do growing children need more calories for proper growth, most children also expend many more calories than older people do. A well balanced diet is essential for any child, but even more so for an athlete. Exerting energy requires a good balance of proteins, carbohydrates and fats. As far as a special diet for athletes is concerned, I do not recommend subjecting athletes to the low-carb or low-fat crazes of today’s society. Athletes require both high protein and carbohydrates and eliminating either one could spell disaster as far as their health is concerned.
Two particular nutrients, iron and calcium are very important to the diet of a young athlete and should be incorporated in the form of quality supplements if the foods are not providing enough. Iron is essential for oxygen transport throughout the body, but also is an important for stabilizing metabolism and for overall cognitive function. Calcium is vital for bone growth and even for healing injuries. Calcium is probably one of the most common deficiencies among athletes because so many of them are concerned about the high fast content of dairy products. But please keep in mind, most young athletes do not need to worry about their fat intake, modern society and the diet craze that America is obsessed with is just misleading our children to believe they need a special diet. When in all actuality, they simply need a role model that promotes a healthy eating lifestyle.
